At our recent retreat, we paused to reflect—on our work, our purpose, and the power of showing up for each other. But that reflection doesn’t end there.
In caregiving, how we talk to ourselves matters just as much as the care we give to others. When we’re tired, overwhelmed, or doubting ourselves, it’s easy for Automatic Negative Thoughts—or ANTs—to sneak in. But with a little practice, we can flip those ANTs into Positive Empowering Thoughts (PETs) that offer kindness, perspective, and strength.
Caregiver ANTs You Might Recognize (and How to Reframe Them into PETs)
-
ANT: “This client’s needs are too much—I’m not cut out for this.”
PET: “This is hard, but I’m not alone. My team is here to support me, and I can reach out.” -
ANT: “Everyone else has it together but me.”
PET: “Everyone struggles sometimes—I’m not alone in this.” -
ANT: “If I ask a question, I’ll sound inexperienced.”
PET: “Asking questions means I care and want to grow.” -
ANT: “I always forget things—I’m so bad at this.”
PET: “I’m learning, and it’s okay to make mistakes.” -
ANT: “They didn’t say thank you—maybe I didn’t do it right.”
PET: “I gave kind, thoughtful care. That speaks for itself.” -
ANT: “There’s too much to do—I’ll never catch up.”
PET: “One step at a time. I can ask for help when I need it.” -
ANT: “I should already know how to handle every situation.”
PET: “Every client and day is different. I’m always learning—and that’s okay.”
Why This Matters
Your inner voice is powerful. It can wear you down or lift you up.
Choosing PETs over ANTs builds resilience, confidence, and a stronger connection to the heart of caregiving.
This Month’s Challenge: Flip One Thought
This month, try to catch one ANT and flip it into a PET.
Just one reframe can shift your entire day.
💚 You deserve to speak to yourself with the same compassion you give to others.
We see you. We’re proud of you. And we’re in this together.
Special thanks to Rob Dirscherl, Director of Training and Development, for introducing this tool and reminding us how much mindset matters.
