In 1992, a $10,000 gift from Louise Sales in honor of her aunt, Givens Estates resident Ruth Parkins, planted the seed for what would become a deeply impactful step for area seniors. With that donation, Givens Communities began providing in-home assistance with daily activities to residents who didn’t require skilled nursing, helping them age comfortably in their homes.
The Aging in Place program is now under the Givens Home First banner and has assessed more than 300 homes, many of which were modified by an in-house technician, who is also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist.
Givens Home First includes two distinct service avenues:
• Home Care, primarily serving residents of Givens Estates in Asheville and Givens Highland Farms in Black Mountain.
• Aging in Place, a trailblazing service available to all Western North Carolina residents—whether they live in a Givens community or not.
The program continues to grow rapidly. While most projects remain under $10,000, the team recently took on its first $50,000+ home remodel in partnership with a local contractor—helping a member of the wider community living with Parkinson’s remain safely in their home.
