Everyone Is Happiest at Home — Including Pets

Pet companionship offers powerful benefits for older adults — supporting physical health, emotional well-being, and social connection. That’s why Givens Choice and Givens Home First are proud to partner with the  Asheville Humane Society to help people and pets find one another.

Because we believe everyone is happiest at home — including shelter pets looking for a loving place to belong.

A Partnership Rooted in Aging Well

To support this shared mission, team members from Givens Choice and Givens Home First recently attended the Asheville Humane Society’s Valentine’s “Fondue of You” donor appreciation event.

During the evening, Erin Strain and Jessie Bosshard, Executive Directors from both organizations shared how our programs help older adults remain safely and comfortably in their homes while continuing to enjoy the companionship and joy pets bring to everyday life.

Adoption Fees Covered: March 16–21

From March 16–21, Givens Choice and Givens Home First will cover all adoption fees for pets adopted at the Asheville Humane Society Adoption Center:

📍 14 Forever Friend Lane, Asheville

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, this is a wonderful opportunity to welcome a new companion into your life.

Why Pets Matter as We Age

Research continues to show that pets play an important role in healthy aging. According to studies on aging and well-being:

  • Companionship reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation

  • Interaction with pets can decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety

  • Pet ownership is linked to lower blood pressure and improved heart health

  • Daily pet care encourages movement, routine, and purpose

For many older adults — especially those living alone — pets provide comfort, structure, and unconditional affection.

Aging in Place — Together

At Givens Choice and Givens Home First, our programs help make life with pets sustainable as needs change. Support services can help older adults maintain routines, stay active, and continue enjoying companionship without worrying about losing independence or leaving home.

With the right support, older adults — and their pets — can age in place safely, happily, and together.

If you’ve been considering adoption, now may be the perfect time to meet your new best friend.
