Building Stronger Bones for a Healthier Future
Osteoporosis, often referred to as the “silent disease,” is characterized by the gradual weakening of bones, which increases the risk of fractures.
Intentionally focusing on bone health and taking proactive steps in preventing osteoporosis include regular exercise, a balanced diet, and lifestyle modifications that help maintain strong bones throughout life.
Calcium, vitamin D, and protein are important in supporting bone health, so be sure you’re focusing on food sources rich in these nutrients: dark, leafy greens, broccoli, fish, meat, yogurt, nuts and seeds. The best sources of calcium and vitamin D are low-fat dairy foods.
How can I keep my bones strong as I age?
- Eat foods that support bone health. Get enough calcium, vitamin D, and protein each day. For additional ideas visit this article from Harvard.
- Get active. Choose weight-bearing exercise, such as strength training, walking, hiking, jogging, climbing stairs, tennis, and dancing. Check out these tips from the Bone Health and Osteoporosis foundation.
- It’s recommended that we don’t smoke and limit alcohol consumption.
Early detection is crucial, as osteoporosis often progresses unnoticed until a fracture occurs. Bone density scans can identify those at risk, allowing for timely intervention.
