April is National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month—a time to celebrate the incredible impact of giving back. Volunteering doesn’t just benefit the people and causes you support—it can also do wonders for you. It helps you feel more connected to your community, keeps you active, boosts both mental and physical well-being, and brings a deeper sense of purpose to your life.

Did you know that adults aged 65 and over lead the way when it comes to volunteering? They’re proving that it doesn’t take a lot of time to make a meaningful difference. And the best part? There are plenty of opportunities to get involved right here in our own community.

Not sure where to begin? Start by asking yourself what you’re passionate about. Are you an animal lover? Do you care deeply about the environment? Maybe you enjoy working with kids—or supporting fellow older adults. Whatever your interests, there’s a volunteer role that’s just right for you.

Many organizations offer flexible scheduling, so you can choose to help out occasionally, monthly, or even weekly. And some opportunities even offer a small stipend to those who qualify. For example, our local Senior Companion Program’s Caregiver Project pairs older adult volunteers with caregivers to provide support, encouragement, and light assistance in the home. If you’d like to learn more, you can reach out to Kelly Morgan, Caregiver Project Manager, at 828-251-7426 or email [email protected]. Residents of Givens can also reach out to their Social Worker and / or Life Enrichment team to explore other ways to volunteer on or off campus!

No matter how big or small your contribution, your time and kindness can make a lasting impact. Happy National Volunteer Month—and thank you for making a difference!
